John Carter, a former Confederate officer prospecting in Arizona, takes refuge from raiders in a cave and wakes to find himself on Mars, which its people call Barsoom. In the lighter gravity he can leap great distances, and he is taken captive by the fierce green Martians, wins the respect of the warrior Tars Tarkas, and falls in love with Dejah Thoris, princess of the red Martian city of Helium, whom he must rescue amid wars between rival nations on a dying planet.
