It was the best of times, it was the worst of times: the story moves between London and Paris in the years before and during the French Revolution. Dr Manette is released after eighteen years in the Bastille and restored to his daughter Lucie; Lucie marries Charles Darnay, a French aristocrat who has renounced his family; and the dissolute English lawyer Sydney Carton, who looks strikingly like Darnay and loves Lucie hopelessly, waits for his chance. When Darnay is condemned by a revolutionary tribunal and Madame Defarge knits the names of the doomed, Carton makes his choice.
