Eighteen of Hans Christian Andersen's tales, from the comic to the heartbreaking. An emperor parades in clothes that do not exist until a child says so, a real princess proves herself by feeling a pea through a pile of mattresses, a fir tree longs for the future and misses its life, and in The Snow Queen little Gerda crosses the world to rescue her friend Kay from a palace of ice. The Little Match Girl, The Red Shoes, The Shadow and The Shoes of Fortune show Andersen's darker side, where wishes and vanity carry a price.
Context and significance
Andersen, the son of a poor shoemaker in Odense, published his first tales in 1835 and kept writing them for nearly forty years, inventing many stories now taken for folklore. Eleven LibriVox volunteers read this collection in about six hours.
