Anne Shirley, now sixteen, gives up college for a while to stay with Marilla and becomes the teacher at Avonlea school. The book follows two years of her life: her pupils, from the gifted Paul Irving to the troublesome; the mischievous orphan twins Davy and Dora, whom Marilla takes in; the Village Improvement Society and its comic disasters; a new and quarrelsome neighbour; and the romantic Miss Lavendar in her stone house, as Anne begins to grow up.
