Peter Blood, an Irish doctor living quietly in England in 1685, is arrested for treating a wounded rebel after Monmouth's rebellion, condemned by the notorious Judge Jeffreys and sold as a slave to a plantation in Barbados. When Spanish raiders attack the island, he escapes with his fellow convicts, seizes their ship and becomes the most daring buccaneer of the Caribbean, an honourable pirate who never forgets Arabella Bishop, the niece of his cruel master.
