About this book

David Copperfield tells his own life: a happy early childhood ended by a cruel stepfather, Mr Murdstone, a brutal boarding school, and work as a child in a London warehouse, where he lodges with the cheerful, penniless Mr Micawber. He runs away to his eccentric great-aunt Betsey Trotwood, who gives him a home and an education, and grows up to become a writer, meeting along the way the treacherous clerk Uriah Heep, the charming Steerforth, the fisherman's family of the Peggottys, and the two women he loves.

Context and significance

Dickens published the novel in 1849 and 1850, drawing on his own childhood, and called it his favourite child among his books. Tadhg reads the whole of it alone, about thirty-two and a half hours.
