About this book

Dracula is told entirely in letters, diaries and newspaper cuttings. A young English solicitor, Jonathan Harker, travels to Transylvania to arrange the purchase of a London house for Count Dracula, and slowly realises that he is the prisoner of something that is not human. The count crosses to England, where a series of night visits drains the life from Lucy Westenra, and her friends, led by the Dutch professor Van Helsing, with Jonathan and his wife Mina, band together to hunt the vampire back to his castle.

Context and significance

Bram Stoker, an Irish theatre manager, published the novel in 1897; he did not invent the vampire, but his count fixed its image for the century of films that followed. Seventeen LibriVox volunteers share the reading, about sixteen and a half hours, which suits a book told in so many voices.
