The authorised biography of Thomas Edison, written while he was still at work. It follows him from a boyhood in Port Huron, Michigan, selling newspapers on trains, to his years as a telegraph operator, his first patents for the stock ticker and multiplex telegraph, the laboratory at Menlo Park, the phonograph, the long search for a lamp filament, the first central power station in New York, and later ventures in ore milling, cement and motion pictures, with many details from Edison's own colleagues.
Context and significance
Frank Lewis Dyer, Edison's lawyer, and the electrical engineer Thomas Commerford Martin published it in 1910, with Edison's co-operation, so it admires its subject without reserve. Twenty-two LibriVox volunteers read it in about thirty hours.
