The ghost of the dead King of Denmark appears to his son, Prince Hamlet, and tells him he was murdered by his own brother Claudius, who has taken both the crown and the queen. Hamlet feigns madness to hide his purpose, stages a play to catch the king's conscience, kills the eavesdropping Polonius by mistake and drives Ophelia, who loves him, to despair, while he asks, in the most famous speeches in English, whether action, or life itself, is worth its cost.
Context and significance
Shakespeare wrote Hamlet around 1600; it is his longest play and perhaps the most often performed. This is a dramatic reading with a full cast of LibriVox volunteers, each taking a part, in about four hours.
