A plain guide to good English for adults who want to improve it. Joseph Devlin explains the parts of speech and how sentences are built, punctuation and the use of capitals, the rules of letter writing, the words and phrases most often misused, slang and how to avoid it, and the differences between speaking and writing well, with long lists of common errors and their corrections and a chapter on mistakes made even by famous authors.
Context and significance
Published in New York in 1910, the book was written for people who had left school early; some usages it condemns have since become normal, but its explanations are clear. For learners of English it doubles as listening practice. Eleven LibriVox volunteers read it in under six hours.
This is a LibriVox recording, read by volunteers and dedicated to the public domain; its audio files are kept by the Internet Archive, which plays and serves them here.
