About this book

Cedric Errol, a cheerful seven-year-old living with his widowed mother in a modest street in New York, learns one day that he is heir to his grandfather, the proud and bad-tempered Earl of Dorincourt, who disowned Cedric's father for marrying an American. Taken to England, the boy believes the best of his grandfather so completely that the old man begins to live up to it, until a rival claimant appears.

Context and significance

Frances Hodgson Burnett published the book in 1886; its success, and the velvet suit with a lace collar the boy wears in its pictures, made it a sensation. Six LibriVox volunteers read it in about six and a half hours.
