Orphaned eleven-year-old Pollyanna Whittier is sent to live with her stern, wealthy Aunt Polly in a small Vermont town. Her late father taught her the glad game, finding something to be glad about in everything, a game that began when she hoped for a doll from the missionary barrel and received a pair of crutches, and was glad she did not need them. Her cheerfulness slowly softens the bitter people around her, until an accident tests the game on Pollyanna herself.
Context and significance
Eleanor H. Porter published the novel in 1913, and the heroine's name entered English for anyone determined to be optimistic. Phil Chenevert reads it alone, in about six hours.
