The first of Andrew Lang's coloured fairy books gathers tales from many countries: Cinderella, The Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast and Puss in Boots from France, Rumpelstiltskin and Hansel and Gretel from Germany, East of the Sun and West of the Moon from Norway, and from the Arabian Nights both Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp and The Forty Thieves, with many lesser-known stories of dwarfs, white cats, magic rings and brave youngest sons.
Context and significance
Lang published the book in 1889, and its success led to eleven more volumes, each named for a colour; his Arabian Nights in this library belongs to the same family. Nineteen LibriVox volunteers read it in about fourteen hours.
