Eight comic stories in which dragons turn up in the most unlikely places. A boy who becomes king opens a magic book of beasts and lets a red dragon loose in his kingdom; two disobedient children set off for the North Pole and meet an ice dragon; a poor blacksmith and his wife tame a dragon with bread and milk; and in other tales whole countries are saved by children who think more quickly than the grown-ups around them.
Context and significance
E. Nesbit wrote the stories for a magazine and gathered them in a book in 1900. Laurie Anne Walden reads all eight alone, in about four hours.
