Buck, a big, pampered dog on a California ranch, is stolen and sold to dealers supplying sled dogs for the Klondike gold rush. Beaten into obedience and thrown into the brutal life of the trail, he learns the law of club and fang, fights the lead dog Spitz for mastery of the team, passes through the hands of kind and foolish owners, and finds devotion at last with John Thornton. When Thornton is killed, nothing holds Buck to men any longer, and he answers the call of the wolves.
Context and significance
Jack London had gone north to the Klondike himself in 1897, and the short novel he published in 1903 made him famous. Four LibriVox volunteers read it in under three and a half hours.
