Edmond Dantès, a young sailor about to be married and made captain, is betrayed by jealous rivals and a self-serving prosecutor and locked away without trial in the Château d'If. After fourteen years, taught by the old abbé in the next cell, who also tells him of a hidden treasure, he escapes in a dead man's sack, finds the treasure on the island of Monte Cristo and returns to Paris as the mysterious Count, to reward those who were loyal and to ruin, one by one, the men who destroyed him. Revenge, the book slowly shows, is harder to control than he imagined.
