Strange things are happening at the Paris Opera: a ghost in evening dress haunts the corridors, a box is kept for him at every performance, and the new managers receive letters demanding his salary. When the young singer Christine Daaé rises suddenly from the chorus to triumph on stage, she confesses to her childhood friend Raoul that a mysterious Angel of Music has been teaching her. The angel is Erik, a disfigured genius who lives in the cellars beside an underground lake, and his love turns to menace as the great chandelier falls and Christine vanishes.
