About this book
In London in 1547, Tom Canty, a beggar boy from Offal Court, and Edward, the young Prince of Wales and son of Henry VIII, meet by chance at the palace gates and, finding they look exactly alike, change clothes for fun. Before they can change back, the prince is thrown out as a ragged madman and Tom is taken for the prince. Edward wanders his kingdom among thieves and beggars and learns how harshly its laws fall on the poor, while Tom learns the burdens of the crown, until coronation day sets things right.
Context and significance
Mark Twain published the novel in 1881, his first attempt at historical fiction, with a satire on injustice beneath its adventure. John Greenman reads it alone, in about seven hours.
