About this book

Humphrey Van Weyden, a refined literary critic, is thrown into the water when his ferry sinks in a fog off San Francisco and is picked up by the Ghost, a sealing schooner bound for the north Pacific. Its captain, Wolf Larsen, is brilliant, self-taught and utterly ruthless, a man who reads philosophy and believes that life is a ferment in which the strong devour the weak, and he refuses to put Humphrey ashore, making him a cabin boy. On that hard voyage Humphrey must find his own strength.

Context and significance

Jack London, who had sailed on a sealing schooner himself at seventeen, published the novel in 1904 as an argument with the philosophy of the superman. Tom Crawford reads it alone, in about eleven and a half hours.
