D'Artagnan rides to Paris from Gascony with a letter of introduction and a quick temper, and on his first day picks quarrels with three of the king's musketeers, Athos, Porthos and Aramis, who become his closest friends. Together they serve Louis XIII and his queen against the schemes of Cardinal Richelieu, most famously by fetching back from England the diamond studs the queen has given to the Duke of Buckingham, and they cross swords again and again with the cardinal's guards and with his beautiful, deadly agent, Milady de Winter.
