About this book
Young Jim Hawkins finds a treasure map in the sea chest of an old pirate who dies at his mother's inn, and sails with Squire Trelawney and Dr Livesey aboard the Hispaniola to find Captain Flint's gold. The ship's cook, the charming one-legged Long John Silver, turns out to be the leader of a mutiny, and the voyage becomes a struggle across the island between the pirates and the loyal few, with a marooned castaway, a stockade, a stolen ship and a parrot that screams for pieces of eight.
Context and significance
Robert Louis Stevenson began the book in 1881 as a game with his stepson, who had drawn the map of an imaginary island, and it fixed for ever the popular picture of pirates. Adrian Praetzellis reads it alone, with plenty of voices, in about seven and a half hours.
