In 1866 ships report a huge, swift creature attacking vessels at sea, and Professor Aronnax, his servant Conseil and the harpooner Ned Land join an American frigate to hunt it. The monster turns out to be the Nautilus, an electric submarine commanded by the mysterious Captain Nemo, who keeps them prisoner and carries them round the world beneath the oceans: underwater forests and pearl beds, a secret tunnel under the isthmus of Suez, the ruins of Atlantis, the South Pole, a battle with giant squid, and the hatred of nations that drives Nemo himself.
Context and significance
Jules Verne published the novel in 1869 and 1870, and his Nautilus imagined real submarines decades before they existed. Twenty-seven LibriVox volunteers share its forty-seven chapters, about sixteen and a half hours.
