Twenty years after The Three Musketeers, d'Artagnan is still a lieutenant, and France is ruled by Cardinal Mazarin in the troubled years of the Fronde. Looking for his old friends, he finds them scattered and on opposite sides: Athos and Aramis with the rebels, Porthos eager for a title. Reunited, they cross to England in a vain attempt to save King Charles I, pursued by Mordaunt, the son of Milady de Winter, who has come for revenge.
Context and significance
Alexandre Dumas published the sequel in 1845, and its four ageing heroes are as lively as ever; The Three Musketeers is in this library too. Twenty-four LibriVox volunteers read it in about twenty-six hours.
