White Fang runs The Call of the Wild in reverse. Born in the frozen north to a she-wolf who is part dog, the cub learns the hard laws of the wild before he is taken in by native hunters, then sold to a cruel man who turns him into a fighting dog. Rescued half dead by Weedon Scott, a mining engineer, he slowly learns trust and affection, follows his master south to California, and in the end gives all his strength to save the family that has tamed him.
Context and significance
Jack London published the novel in 1906 as a companion to his earlier book, telling much of it from the animal's own point of view. Nine LibriVox volunteers read its twenty-five chapters, about eight and a half hours.
