About this book

After their mother has died and their father's business has failed, the six Bastable children decide to restore the family fortunes by hunting for treasure. Narrated by Oswald, who pretends not to be Oswald, their schemes include digging for buried gold in the garden, becoming detectives, writing poetry to sell to newspapers, rescuing a princess and holding a gentleman to ransom, each going comically wrong.

Context and significance

E. Nesbit published the book in 1899, and Oswald's boastful, self-deceiving voice made it a new kind of children's book, told by a child as children really talk. Read Five Children and It and The Railway Children.
