About this book

On a stormy night, Sergeant-Major Morris, back from years in India, shows his friends the Whites a dried monkey's paw: an old fakir put a spell on it, he says, so that three men could each have three wishes, to show that fate rules people's lives and that those who interfere with it do so to their sorrow. Against his warning, Mr White wishes for two hundred pounds. The money comes the next day, in a way that destroys the family, and the old couple's next wish leads to a knocking at the door in the dead of night that has frightened readers for over a century.

Context and significance

W. W. Jacobs (1863–1943) was best known for comic stories of sailors and dockside life, and this volume of his collection The Lady of the Barge (1902), illustrated by Maurice Greiffenhagen, mixes 'The Monkey's Paw' with several of them. The tale has been adapted endlessly for stage and screen. For more classic horror, read the tales in The Works of Edgar Allan Poe — Volume 2.
