About this book

In fourteen comic essays, Jerome K. Jerome offers his idle thoughts on being hard up, on being in love, on vanity, on the weather, on memory, on cats and dogs, on babies, on being shy, on eating and drinking and on getting on in the world, mixing humour with moments of real feeling. 'It is impossible to enjoy idling thoroughly,' he writes, 'unless one has plenty of work to do.'

Context and significance

Jerome published the book in 1886, three years before Three Men in a Boat, and it sold so well that it made his name. Worth reading alongside it: his Three Men on the Bummel.
