About this book

What is education for in a democratic society? John Dewey argues that it should not be the passive filling of children's minds with facts, but a process of growth through experience, in which children learn by doing, by solving real problems and by working together. A school, he says, should be a small democratic community, and education is not merely a preparation for life but part of living itself, the means by which a society renews itself.

Context and significance

Dewey (1859–1952), the American philosopher and reformer who founded an experimental school in Chicago, published the book in 1916, and it remains one of the most influential works on education ever written. Compare William James's Pragmatism.
