About this book

During the First World War, Captain Hastings, home on sick leave, is invited to Styles Court, a country house where the wealthy Emily Inglethorp has just married a much younger man. One night she dies in agony from strychnine poisoning, and Hastings calls in an old acquaintance, a Belgian refugee living in the village: a small, fussy former police detective named Hercule Poirot.

Context and significance

Published in 1920, this was Agatha Christie's first novel, written after her sister challenged her to write a detective story; several publishers rejected it. Her work in a hospital pharmacy during the war gave her an expert knowledge of poisons that shows on every page. Poirot's later cases include The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.
