About this book

In 1366, young Alleyne Edricson, raised by monks in a Hampshire abbey, goes out into the world at twenty and falls in with a band of English archers and soldiers of fortune, the White Company, recruited for a war in Spain. With the huge, rough archer Hordle John and the veteran bowman Samkin Aylward, he becomes squire to the brave little knight Sir Nigel Loring and follows him through adventures in France and Spain, falling in love with Sir Nigel's daughter, Maude.

Context and significance

Arthur Conan Doyle thought his historical novels, above all this one, published in 1891, better than his Sherlock Holmes stories, and it was hugely popular in its day. Read The Exploits of Brigadier Gerard and The Hound of the Baskervilles.

About the author

Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was born in Edinburgh, trained as a doctor and wrote stories while waiting for patients at his practice in Southsea. Sherlock Holmes, modelled partly on his old teacher Joseph Bell, who could diagnose a patient's life at a glance, first appeared in 1887 and soon made Doyle one of the best-paid writers in the world.

He grew tired of his detective, killed him off in 1893 and was forced by his readers to bring him back. Doyle also wrote historical novels, the adventure The Lost World and campaigns for wrongly convicted men. Start with The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and The Hound of the Baskervilles.
