About this book

Grigory Pechorin is a young Russian officer posted to the Caucasus: brave, intelligent, handsome and bored with everything. We meet him first through an old captain's story of how he carried off Bela, a Circassian chieftain's daughter, then in a brief glimpse by a traveller, and finally through his own journals, in which he coolly describes toying with a young princess at a spa town, provoking a duel and testing fate with a loaded pistol.

Context and significance

Mikhail Lermontov (1814–1841), poet and officer, had himself been exiled to the Caucasus for a poem attacking the court after Pushkin's death in a duel. Published in 1840, the book is one of the first great Russian novels, and its five linked stories show Pechorin from ever closer viewpoints. A year later Lermontov too was killed in a duel, aged twenty-six. See also Pushkin.
