About this book

Ambrose Bierce fought for the North in the American Civil War, and his stories of soldiers are among the most terrible and powerful war stories ever written: 'An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge', in which a man about to be hanged imagines his escape; 'Chickamauga', in which a deaf child plays among the dying; and 'One of the Missing'. His stories of civilians are tales of horror and the supernatural, often with a cruel twist at the end.

Context and significance

The stories were first collected in 1891 as Tales of Soldiers and Civilians, and this is the second volume of Bierce's Collected Works, published in 1909. Bierce disappeared in Mexico during the revolution, around 1914. Read his The Devil's Dictionary and Crane's The Red Badge of Courage.
