About this book

In 1757, during the war between Britain and France for North America, the scout Hawkeye and his Mohican friends Chingachgook and his son Uncas guide two sisters, Cora and Alice Munro, through the forests of upstate New York to their father, the commander of Fort William Henry. Their journey is shadowed by Magua, a Huron warrior with his own reasons for revenge, and the fort's fall leads to a massacre.

Context and significance

James Fenimore Cooper (1789–1851) published the novel in 1826, the second of his five Leatherstocking Tales about Hawkeye, and it became one of the first American bestsellers. Its view of Native Americans mixes admiration with the stereotypes of its time. The 1992 film introduced it to new readers.
