About this book

Alice Adams, a pretty, clever and ambitious girl in a Midwestern city, longs to belong to the world of the rich young people she grew up with, but her family is poor: her father is a sick clerk at a wholesale drug company, and her mother nags him into starting a glue factory of his own. When the wealthy Arthur Russell begins to court her, Alice invents a grander life for herself and her family to impress him, and dreads the dinner at which he will see the truth.

Context and significance

Booth Tarkington published the novel in 1921, and it won him his second Pulitzer Prize, after The Magnificent Ambersons. The 1935 film starred Katharine Hepburn.
