About this book

The young knight Tristan, nephew of King Mark of Cornwall, sails to Ireland to bring back the beautiful princess Iseult as his uncle's bride. On the voyage they drink by mistake a love potion meant for Iseult and Mark, and from then on they are bound together by a love stronger than loyalty, honour or death, through secret meetings, banishment, years in the forest and Tristan's last wait, wounded, for the ship that will bring Iseult to him under white sails or black.

Context and significance

The French scholar Joseph Bédier (1864–1938) published this reconstruction of the medieval legend in 1900, piecing together the scattered twelfth-century versions into one moving story; the English translation is by the poet Hilaire Belloc. Compare Tennyson's Idylls of the King.
