About this book

In the spring of 1846, the young Bostonian Francis Parkman, fresh from Harvard, set out from St Louis with his cousin Quincy Adams Shaw to see the American West before it vanished. They followed the emigrant trail across the plains to Fort Laramie, met settlers bound for Oregon, hunted buffalo and spent weeks living with a band of Oglala Sioux, whose daily life, hunts and preparations for war Parkman described in detail.

Context and significance

Published as a book in 1849, it is one of the classic accounts of the frontier, by a man who went on to become one of America's great historians, though his view of Native Americans reflects the prejudices of his day. Parkman (1823–1893) suffered from poor health and weak eyesight for the rest of his life. Compare Mark Twain's Roughing It.
