About this book

The Poetic Edda gathers the old poems of the Norse gods and heroes preserved in an Icelandic manuscript of the thirteenth century: the Voluspa, a seeress's vision of the creation of the world and its destruction at Ragnarok; the Havamal, the sayings of Odin; the comic tale of Thor's hammer stolen by a giant; and the heroic lays of Sigurd and the Volsungs. This volume also includes the Younger Edda of Snorri Sturluson, his handbook of Norse myth and poetry.

Context and significance

The poems were once attributed to the Icelandic scholar Saemund the Learned, though this is now doubted. The translations are by Benjamin Thorpe and J. A. Blackwell. Read The Story of the Volsungs and Heimskringla.
