About this book

After the death of her silent, eccentric father, seventeen-year-old Maud Ruthyn learns that his will has made her the ward of his brother Silas, a man she has never met, who long ago was suspected of murdering a gambler found dead in a locked room at his house. Her father hoped to clear his brother's name by trusting him. So Maud goes to live at Bartram-Haugh, Silas's decaying mansion, with its sinister servants and his coarse son Dudley, and slowly realises that if she dies before she comes of age, her fortune will pass to Silas.

Context and significance

Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1814–1873), an Irish writer and newspaper owner, published the novel in 1864. A masterpiece of slowly building Gothic suspense, with a terrifying French governess, Madame de la Rougierre, it influenced later writers of mystery and horror. It pairs well with Le Fanu's vampire novella Carmilla.
