About this book

This first volume of Edmund Burke's works contains his early writings. In A Vindication of Natural Society (1756), he imitates and mocks the style of the philosopher Bolingbroke. In A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful (1757), he argues that the sublime, the feeling we have before storms, mountains, vastness and darkness, springs from a kind of delightful terror, while beauty arises from smallness, smoothness and delicacy. The volume also contains political writings of the 1760s and 1770s, including Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents.

Context and significance

Burke (1729–1797), an Irish-born statesman, became the founder of modern conservatism with his Reflections on the Revolution in France, which provoked Thomas Paine's reply, Rights of Man. His Enquiry on the sublime deeply influenced Romantic art and the Gothic novel, such as The Mysteries of Udolpho.
