About this book

In essays, stories, poems and autobiographical pieces, W. E. B. Du Bois looks at the world after the First World War through the eyes of the colonised and the oppressed: 'the souls of white folk' who claim to rule the world by right, the colonial greed in Africa that he saw as a root of the war, the riots against Black workers in East St Louis in 1917, the dignity of Black women, and the hope of a future in which all races share in work and culture.

Context and significance

Du Bois (1868–1963) published the book in 1920 as a kind of sequel to The Souls of Black Folk, and its essays on race and empire are among his most powerful. Compare Booker T. Washington's Up from Slavery.
