About this book

This book introduces the myths and legends of China: how the giant Pangu shaped heaven and earth; the gods of the Taoist and Buddhist pantheons, from the Jade Emperor who rules heaven to the compassionate Guanyin; the Eight Immortals; the dragon kings of the seas; the gods of thunder, fire, wealth and the stars; and many folk tales of ghosts, fox spirits and heroes, including the adventures of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King. Werner also explains the beliefs and customs behind the stories.

Context and significance

E. T. C. Werner (1864–1954) spent many years in China as a British diplomat and published the book in 1922, with illustrations by Chinese artists. It remains a rich and readable introduction to Chinese mythology. For China's most famous ancient book of strategy, read The Art of War.
