About this book

Three portraits of working women in 'Bridgepoint', a city modelled on Baltimore: the good Anna, a German servant who devotes her life to managing other people; Melanctha, a young Black woman searching restlessly for understanding and love in a long affair with a cautious doctor, Jeff Campbell; and the gentle Lena, a passive German immigrant girl married off to a man she hardly knows.

Context and significance

Gertrude Stein (1874–1946), the American writer whose Paris salon welcomed Picasso and Hemingway, published the book in 1909 at her own expense. Its repetitive, rhythmic style, shaped by Cézanne's painting and by the psychology of her teacher William James, was a landmark of modernist prose, though its racial language belongs to its time. Compare Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio.
