About this book

The saga of the Volsungs tells the tragic story of a family of heroes descended from the god Odin: Sigmund, who draws the sword Odin thrust into a tree; his son Sigurd, who kills the dragon Fafnir, tastes its blood and understands the speech of birds, wins a cursed treasure and awakens the shield-maiden Brynhild; and the betrayal and vengeance that follow, when Sigurd is tricked into marrying Gudrun and Brynhild seeks his death.

Context and significance

Written in Iceland in the thirteenth century from older heroic poems, the saga tells the same legend as the German Nibelungenlied, and it inspired Wagner's Ring and Tolkien. This translation, first published in 1870, is by Eiríkr Magnússon and William Morris, with excerpts from the Poetic Edda. Read The Story of Burnt Njal.
