About this book

Philip Nolan, a young American army officer, is caught up in the conspiracy of Aaron Burr and, at his court-martial in 1807, cries out that he wishes never to hear of the United States again. The court grants his wish: for the rest of his life he is kept at sea, passed from one navy ship to another, and no one is ever allowed to speak to him of his country or show him its news. Over the long decades he comes to understand what he has lost.

Context and significance

Edward Everett Hale (1822–1909), a Boston clergyman, published the story in 1863, during the Civil War, to strengthen loyalty to the Union, and many readers took it for a true story. The volume adds other tales. Compare Washington Irving's Rip Van Winkle.
