About this book

One night Queen Medb of Connacht and her husband Ailill argue in bed about which of them is richer, and find that they are equal in everything except one thing: Ailill owns a magnificent white-horned bull. To match him, Medb sets out with a huge army to seize the Brown Bull of Cooley from the kingdom of Ulster. The warriors of Ulster lie helpless under an ancient curse, and only the seventeen-year-old hero Cú Chulainn stands against the invaders, holding the fords in single combat day after day, until he must fight his own foster brother and dearest friend, Ferdiad.

Context and significance

The Táin Bó Cúalnge, the 'Cattle Raid of Cooley', is the central epic of early Ireland, preserved in manuscripts of the twelfth century but much older in origin. This translation, of 1914, is by Joseph Dunn. Its Old English cousin among heroic poems is Beowulf.
