About this book
King Dushyanta, hunting in the forest, comes to a hermitage and falls in love with Shakuntala, the foster daughter of a sage, marries her secretly and gives her his ring. But Shakuntala, lost in thoughts of him, fails to greet a short-tempered holy man, who curses her: the king will forget her until he sees the ring again. When she comes to his court, pregnant, he does not know her, for the ring has been lost in a river, until a fisherman finds it inside a fish.
Context and significance
Kalidasa, the greatest poet of classical Sanskrit, probably lived in the fifth century, and Shakuntala is his masterpiece. When it was translated into European languages in 1789 it amazed readers, and Goethe wrote a famous verse in its praise. This volume, translated by Arthur W. Ryder, also includes Kalidasa's other works. Compare The Song Celestial.
