About the author

Al-Jahiz (c. 776–868) of Basra, the great master of Arabic prose, read everything he could find; it was said he rented booksellers' shops at night to read their stock.

His Book of Animals, his work on eloquence al-Bayan wa al-Tabyin and the satirical Book of Misers mix learning, wit and digression; the library holds old printed editions of several of his works.
