About the author
Abu Abdallah al-Idrisi (1100–1165) was born in Ceuta, studied in Córdoba and travelled widely before the Norman king Roger II of Sicily invited him to Palermo to make a description of the whole known world. With the help of travellers and merchants, he worked on it for some fifteen years.
The result, completed in 1154, was The Book of Pleasant Journeys into Faraway Lands, with a world map in seventy sections and a great map engraved on silver. It was one of the most accurate geographies of the Middle Ages and is a monument to cooperation between Arab and European scholars.
