About this book

Two sisters, Laura and Lizzie, hear the goblin men crying their fruits in the glen each evening: 'Come buy, come buy.' Laura pays with a lock of her golden hair, eats the fruit, and begins to waste away with longing for more, until Lizzie goes to the goblins herself, endures their attack without tasting, and saves her. This volume collects 'Goblin Market' with 'The Prince's Progress' and many other poems of love, loss, faith and death.

Context and significance

Christina Rossetti (1830–1894), the sister of the painter and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti, published Goblin Market in 1862, and readers still debate its meaning, whether as fairy tale, religious allegory or poem about temptation and desire. Compare Tennyson's Idylls of the King and Blake's Songs of Innocence and of Experience.
