About the author

Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543) was born in Toruń in Poland, studied in Kraków and in Italy, at Bologna, Padua and Ferrara, and spent most of his life as a canon of Frombork cathedral, working as an administrator and physician while observing the sky.

His book On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres, published in the year of his death, placed the Sun, not the Earth, at the centre of the universe. Historians have shown that he used mathematical models developed earlier by astronomers of the Islamic world, at the observatory of Maragha. Galileo took up his cause.
